Pit Stop: Table Pepper Mill/Shaker

A Retro Sci-Fi Inspired Design by Clive and Tina Bullivant

Inspired by a fascination for 1950s Science Fiction and classic sports cars.

Clive and Tina Bullivant have created a unique and innovative table pepper mill/shaker called Pit Stop. This design stands out with its inverted form and combines the benefits of freshly ground pepper with the accurate dispensing of a shaker.

The Pit Stop grinders feature an inverted design that stands on a tumbler base, which also serves as the reservoir for the peppercorns. This clever design prevents loose grindings from soiling tables and creating a mess. The pepper is ground into a stainless steel 'bulb' from which it can be shaken over food, ensuring precise dispensing.

The realization of the Pit Stop design involves injection molded polyamide over-molded with a soft-touch silicon grip. The reservoir and shaker bulb are press-formed from stainless steel, giving them a light brushed finish. The overall dimensions of the unit are 125mm x 125mm x 150mm.

One of the strengths of the Pit Stop design is its visually interesting table presence. The ergonomics of the grinder are carefully considered, with the polyamide grip featuring a soft-touch finish for a pleasing handling experience. The design also incorporates a deliberate retro feel, drawing inspiration from shapes and forms of a bygone era while utilizing contemporary materials.

The Pit Stop design project was started in August and completed in October 2011. Throughout the development process, primary investigation and research were conducted to ensure optimal ergonomics, shaker hole size, and the balance of the inverted form.

The main challenges faced during the design process were to create something visually unique, easy to handle and operate, and efficient in dispensing ground pepper without any residual mess. The Bullivants successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in the award-winning Pit Stop design.

The Pit Stop table pepper mill/shaker has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2012 in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Pit Stop design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
